Lake Windermere is England's largest (in terms of area) and longest lake at 10.5 miles long, and that's really why we chose to swim it.  It's up to a mile wide in places and has a maximum depth of 66 metres.  It hold a monstrous 300 million cubic metres of water, although apparently in the UK, we produce enough waste to fill it every eight months!  See this link...  We were slightly concerned to read on the website of future Windermere and channel swimmer Emma France that only "elite" swimmers can rise to the challenge of Windermere - oooh er!

Visit the National Park webpage for the lake here.  It's full of information about visiting the lake and stuff to do there.

There are some other links, including some cool photos, about Lake Windermere in the links page.

We'll update this page with information about other people's swimming exploits in Windermere as we find them.

Meanwhile here is a stunning photograph of the lake which should give you some idea of it enormity!  Depending on the wind on the day, we will most likely be heading bottom to top of the photo...
